Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the standard \u02f9to distinguish between right and wrong\u02fa. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then \u02f9let them fast\u02fa an equal number of days \u02f9after Rama\u1e0d\u00e2n\u02fa. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful.<\/p>\n

Muslims hold that all\u00a0scripture<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0during Ramadan, the\u00a0scrolls of Abraham<\/a>,\u00a0Torah<\/a>,\u00a0Psalms<\/a>,\u00a0Gospel<\/a>, and\u00a0Quran<\/a>\u00a0having been handed down on the first, sixth, twelfth, thirteenth (in some sources, eighteenth)[41]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and twenty-fourth Ramadans,[year\u00a0needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>\u00a0respectively.[42]<\/a><\/sup>[self-published source<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>\u00a0Muhammed is said to have received his first quranic revelation on\u00a0Laylat al-Qadr<\/a><\/i>, one of five odd-numbered nights that fall during the last ten days of Ramadan.[43]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Although Muslims were first commanded to fast in the second year of\u00a0Hijra<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(624 CE),[42]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0they believe that the practice of fasting is not in fact an innovation of\u00a0monotheism<\/a>[44]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0but rather has always been necessary for believers to attain\u00a0taqwa<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(the\u00a0fear of God<\/a>).[45]<\/a><\/sup>[Quran\u00a02:183<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0They point to the fact that the\u00a0pre-Islamic pagans<\/a>\u00a0of Mecca fasted on the tenth day of\u00a0Muharram<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0expiate sin<\/a>\u00a0and avoid\u00a0drought<\/a>.[46]<\/a><\/sup>[self-published source<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>\u00a0Philip Jenkins<\/a>\u00a0argues that the observance of Ramadan fasting grew out of “the strict\u00a0Lenten<\/a>\u00a0discipline of the\u00a0Syrian Churches<\/a>,” a postulation corroborated by other scholars, including theologian\u00a0Paul-Gordon Chandler<\/a>,[47]<\/a><\/sup>[48]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0but disputed by some Muslim academics.[49]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

\"Ramadan\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The length of the dawn to sunset time varies in different parts of the world according to summer or winter solstices of the Sun. Most Muslims fast for eleven to sixteen hours during Ramadan. However, in polar regions, the period between dawn and sunset may exceed twenty-two hours in summer. For example, in 2014, Muslims in Reykjavik, Iceland, and Trondheim, Norway, fasted almost twenty-two hours, while Muslims in Sydney, Australia, fasted for only about eleven hours. In areas characterized by continuous night or day, some Muslims follow the fasting schedule observed in the nearest city that experiences sunrise and sunset, while others follow Mecca time.[18]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup>[20]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Muslims continue to work during Ramadan;[135]<\/a><\/sup>[136]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0however, in some countries, such as Oman and Lebanon, working hours are shortened.[137]<\/a><\/sup>[138]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It is often recommended that working Muslims inform their employers if they are fasting, given the potential for the observance to impact performance at work.[139]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The extent to which Ramadan observers are protected by\u00a0religious accommodation<\/a>\u00a0varies by country. Policies putting them at a disadvantage compared to other employees have been met with discrimination claims in the United Kingdom and the United States.[140]<\/a><\/sup>[141]<\/a><\/sup>[142]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0An\u00a0Arab News<\/a>\u00a0article reported that\u00a0Saudi Arabian<\/a>\u00a0businesses were unhappy with shorter working hours during Ramadan, some reporting a decline in productivity of 35\u201350%.[143]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The Saudi businesses proposed awarding salary bonuses in order to incentivize longer hours.[144]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Despite the reduction in productivity, merchants can enjoy higher profit margins in Ramadan due to increase in demand.[145]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
